Decoration Day: A Bloom Building Ritual and Gathering

In 1865, newly freed Black people in Charleston held the first Decoration Day.
They gathered, paraded, sang, and laid flowers to honor Black Union soldiers buried in mass graves.

That was the first Memorial Day.

Our people made something out of nothing. They made memory into ritual.
That spirit lives on in our community-building, our art, our resistance. This weekend, we gather in that same spirit.

We carry that legacy forward.

Join us for an afternoon of reflection, connection, and care as we craft fabric blooms for the Black, Purple, BLOOM Memorial Tower—a living altar to Black and Brown Womxn lost to state violence and COVID-19.
